Greco-Roman Enthusiasts at Trent

General Duties

During my two years with GREAT, I was helping out to do and plan a lot of events and talks. As we were the go-between the students and professors, we also sometimes got to chat with them and see where things could be done for the students. Plus, we also talked about what events students would like to see.

In my first year as Vice President, I had to make sure that everyone was on task and that things were getting done and that notes were also taken. During this time, too, I was helping to plan some events like trivia nights and movie nights. I also had to communicate with the team about any issues for meetings, and help organise and plan for the event and run them.

By the time I was President, I had to schedule meetings for the team to figure out what we were doing for the year, and then if anything needed to improve. As president, I got to create a trivia night with Trent’s anthropology club, while also scheduling meetings and movie nights.

Guest Lecture

While I was still the previous year, with everything happening in the news with the queer community that April, I had the idea of maybe having a guest lecturer talking about the queer community in ancient Rome and/or Greece. So, I presented this idea to the rest of the club, and they all loved that idea. From there, I emailed the programme coordinator with my idea and asked if this would be a possibility. He responded saying that it was a very interesting idea, he would just have to figure out the budget and see if it would work. If it did happen, it would be happening in the winter semester of the next year. After the first week back in September, the programme coordinator got back to me and said that we could do this guest lecture on the queer community. From there, I had to research academics in the field whose research was in the queer community for Ancient Greece and Rome. Afterwards, I created a list for him and said why I wanted each person possibly to come and do the talk. From there, we emailed Victoria Wool from the University of Toronto to ask and see if she could possibly come to talk. When she got back to me saying that she would love to do that, I worked with the scheduling coordinator and Victoria Wall to finalise the dates and what the talk would be about. As I had graduated by that December, it was up to the other members of the club to figure out when in January the talk would be done. However, I was able to go and see it. I had just provided the foundation for this talk, so all they had to do was pick when and where they were doing the talk.
